iPad impressions, pt. iii

(This is my first post from the actual iPad itself — and it looks like Mobile Safari doesn’t like Tumblr’s rich text editor. Ah well.)

In short: I like this thing a lot. The form factor is just about perfect, the on-screen keyboard is surprisingly easy to use, and the software itself is smooth as silk. There’s something very, very satisfying about lying back on the couch, comfortably browsing the web and listening to some tunes in the background. The whole computing experience feels much more immediate when it’s literally at your fingertips.

That being said, I’m not entirely sure it’s the right device for someone like me. Sure, it’s a fantastic little plaything, but as someone who’s constantly working on tech projects, I need something with a little more power and flexibility on-hand, and as long as my laptop’s already open, I doubt I’ll be reaching for this. Where I will be using this is in more casual settings: lounging around on the weekend, checking messages before going to bed, things like that. It’s an extremely natural fit for those kinds of situations, and I think it’ll meet some major mainstream success for that very reason, but as a college student $XX,000 in debt, it just doesn’t make sense for me. Or at least it wouldn’t, if I weren’t developing for it :P
